In an effort to combat large-scale ground forces, The Federation decided to design a dedicated spacecraft for bringing front line troops into combat. To this end, the designers at Starfleet R&D developed the Battle cruiser. A ship with the space on board designed to accommodate large numbers of troops and equipment. The primary purpose of the Battle cruiser is troop deployment. As a secondary role, the battle cruisers can also act in a support platform to assist planetary forces by engaging planetary emplacements that would normally entail the use of heavy equipment and or ground vehicles that may otherwise be engaged with other duties.
The ship’s primary weapons also act as a defense platform for the ship to be able to defend itself against defensive forces around a planet and or space-based defense systems such as satellites and orbital mines.
The ship itself is designed to hold large numbers of ground troops for deployment. This includes a full Regiment made up of 1,117 troops, 12 combat shuttlecraft, and 6 Heavy Combat Shuttle craft.
The preliminary results of the design have proven fruitful in that the ships have performed to the specifications of the design. The ships are able to deploy large numbers of troops in the battalion range in a very short period. The ships are equipped with the typical aft facing shuttle bays, but with a larger capacity then the standard bay in order to facilitate the large deployment craft for equipment and supplies.
