PowerPoint Viewer is a viewing utility distributed freely by Microsoft to allow computer user not owning a copy of PowerPoint to be able to view PowerPoint presentations created on another computer. PowerPoint presentation are cross-platform compatible (Macintosh/PC).
A first version of the Viewer is accessible from this Downloading Page. This is a version for presentations created under PowerPoint 2, 3 and 4. The file size is 615 kB.
There is also a Version 98 (length 6MB). Both files are BinHex files.
The first version of the Viewer is a Binhex file called 'viewer.hqx'. When copied to a Macintosh medium, the filename (stored in the container) becomes 'viewer.sea'. This is a self-extracting archive made with Compactor. When executed, it creates a folder named Viewer and a program called 'MS PowerPoint Viewer'.
The second file is called 'ppt98vw.hqx' on the PC. When copied to a Macintosh medium, the filename (stored in the container) becomes 'MacPPView.sit'. This compressed archive must be decompressed with Unstuffit (or equivalent) to produce a folder 'Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Viewer'. You should give those precisions to your users in a readme file.
