DMGIF12.DOC - How to Make Install Diskettes ------------------------------------------- Dmgif version 1.2 is a GIF and JPEG viewer for DOS, or for DeskMate 3.0x. It supports rescaling, dithering, zooming, panning, color adjustment, and printing. When running under DeskMate, it supports copying to the clipboard, accessories, and task switching. The interface is by either keyboard or mouse, uses menus and dialog boxes, and there is online help (context-sensitive under DOS, or under DeskMate 3.03 or later). The program is fully configurable. A variety of video cards and printers is supported, and color adjustment is provided for all video cards, not just VGA. A serial mouse, PS/2 mouse, or joystick can be used. A documentation file in ASCII format is also provided. Dmgif 1.2 expects to be run or installed from diskettes. If you got Dmgif from an ftp site, an online service, or a BBS, you need to make diskettes for it before it can be installed or run. You need PKUNZIP version 2.04g or a compatible program; PKUNZIP 2.04g is available on almost any ftp site, online service, or BBS. Once you make some install diskettes, you can install the DOS version of Dmgif on your hard drive, install the DeskMate version of Dmgif on your hard drive, run the DOS version of Dmgif, run the DeskMate version of Dmgif, or uninstall Dmgif, using the same set of diskettes. NOTE: Do not run or install the DOS version on a system with DeskMate installed. ------- If you have a 360k (5-1/4" low-density) diskette drive, proceed as follows. You need 3 empty, formatted diskettes and 3 labels for them, plus 3 more diskettes and 3 labels to make a backup copy. Insert the first diskette in your drive, change to that drive, and use PKUNZIP to decompress DMGIF12A.ZIP onto that drive (example): A:\> PKUNZIP B:\DMGIF12A.ZIP When PKUNZIP is finished, label that diskette "DMGIF 1" and set it aside. Insert another blank diskette in the drive, and decompress DMGIF12B.ZIP onto it: A:\> PKUNZIP B:\DMGIF12B.ZIP When PKUNZIP is finished, label that diskette "DMGIF 2" and set it aside. Insert the third blank diskette in the drive, and decompress DMGIF12C.ZIP onto it: A:\> PKUNZIP B:\DMGIF12C.ZIP When PKUNZIP is finished, label that diskette "DMGIF 3". The labels are used by the installation program and by Dmgif (under DOS, or under DeskMate 3.03 or later) to prompt you to insert diskettes when needed. If a certain file is needed, and that file is on DMGIF 2, Install or Dmgif will tell you to insert disk DMGIF 2. You should now make a backup copy of the install diskettes. Use the DISKCOPY command for this: A:\> DISKCOPY A: B: Write-protect the originals and set them aside. Do not write-protect the copies. Read the file README on disk "DMGIF 1" for instructions on how to install or run Dmgif. ------- If you have a 720k (3-1/2" low-density) diskette drive, proceed as follows. You need 2 empty, formatted diskettes and 2 labels for them, plus 2 more diskettes and 2 more labels to make a backup copy. Insert the first diskette in your drive, change to that drive, and use PKUNZIP to decompress DMGIF12A.ZIP onto that drive (example): A:\> PKUNZIP B:\DMGIF12A.ZIP Leave the same diskette in the drive, and decompress DMGIF12B.ZIP onto the same diskette: A:\> PKUNZIP B:\DMGIF12B.ZIP You will get some messages saying that some file "already exists"; Pkunzip will ask "Overwrite (y/n/a/r)?". Say "n" - DMGIF12B.ZIP has a couple of the same files as DMGIF12A.ZIP, for the convenience of people with 360k drives. Both copies of the file are the same. Now issue the following command. This will replace the LABEL.LBL file for 360k disks with the LABEL.LBL file for 720k disks: A:\> COPY LABEL720.LBL LABEL.LBL Label that diskette "DMGIF 1 & 2" and set it aside. Insert the other blank diskette in the drive, and decompress DMGIF12C.ZIP onto it: A:\> PKUNZIP B:\DMGIF12C.ZIP Replace the LABEL.LBL file like you did with the other disk: A:\> COPY LABEL720.LBL LABEL.LBL Label that diskette "DMGIF 3". The labels are used by the installation program and by Dmgif (under DOS, or under DeskMate 3.03 or later) to prompt you to insert diskettes when needed. If a certain file is needed, and that file is on DMGIF 1 & 2, Install or Dmgif will tell you to insert disk DMGIF 1 & 2. You should now make a backup copy of the install diskettes. Use the DISKCOPY command for this: A:\> DISKCOPY A: B: Write-protect the originals and set them aside. Do not write-protect the copies. Read the file README on disk "DMGIF 1 & 2" for instructions on how to install or run Dmgif. ------- If you have a 1.2M (5-1/4" high-density), 1.44M (3-1/2" high-density), or 2.88M (3-1/2" quad-density) drive, proceed as follows. You need 1 empty, formatted diskette and 1 label for it, plus 1 more diskette and 1 more label for a backup copy. Insert the diskette in your drive, change to that drive, and use PKUNZIP to decompress DMGIF12A.ZIP onto that drive (example): A:\> PKUNZIP B:\DMGIF12A.ZIP Leave the same diskette in the drive, and decompress DMGIF12B.ZIP onto the same diskette: A:\> PKUNZIP B:\DMGIF12B.ZIP Leave the same diskette in the drive, and decompress DMGIF12C.ZIP onto the same diskette: A:\> PKUNZIP B:\DMGIF12C.ZIP You will get some messages saying that some file "already exists"; Pkunzip will ask "Overwrite (y/n/a/r)?". Say "n" - some of the files in the different archives are duplicates for the convenience of people with 360k or 720k drives. All copies of the file are the same. Now issue the following command. This will replace the LABEL.LBL file for 360k disks with the LABEL.LBL file for high-density disks: A:\> COPY LABELHD.LBL LABEL.LBL Label the diskette "DMGIF 1,2,3". You should now make a backup copy of the install diskette. Use the DISKCOPY command for this: A:\> DISKCOPY A: B: Write-protect the original and set it aside. Do not write-protect the copy. Read the file README on disk "DMGIF 1,2,3" for instructions on how to install or run Dmgif.
