Before you listen to a cassette tape, set your receiver/amplifier's 
volume to its lowest setting.  After the cassette tape starts playing,
adjust the volume to a comfortable listening level.

TURNING ON THE CASSETTE DECK

Press POWER to turn the cassette deck on and off.

LOADING A CASSETTE TAPE

1.  Before loading a cassette tape, take up any slack in the tape by
    turning the hub with a pencil.  Avoid touching the tape.  If you do
    not remove excess slack, the tape might become tangled in the
    record/playback mechanism.

2.  Press STOP/EJECT to open the cassette compartment on either deck (TAPE
    1 or TAPE 2).

NOTE:  Tape 2 has a record button.

3.  Insert a cassette with the open side down and the full reel to the
    left desired side facing out.

4.  Gently close the compartment door.

PLAYING A CASSETTE TAPE

1.  Load a cassette tape in TAPE 1 or TAPE 2.

2.  Press DOLBY NR OUT/IN to IN an select DOLBY NR B/C to B or C if the
    cassette tape was recorded with Dolby.  See "Dolby Noise Reduction."

3.  Press PLAY on the deck you are using.  Your cassette deck's auto-tape
    select function automatically adjusts for the type of tape you are
    playing.

NOTE:  TAPE 2 has a record button.

4.  Adjust the volume, tone, and balance controls on your receiver/
    amplifier for the desired sound.

5.  Press STOP/EJECT to stop the tape.  Press STOP/EJECT again to open the
    cassette compartment and remove the cassette.

To temporarily stop the tape, press PAUSE on the deck you are using.
Press PAUSE again to continue play.

To use fast-forward or rewind, simply press FAST-F >> or REWIND << on the
deck you are using.  Press STOP/EJECT to stop fast-forward or rewind.

USING DIRECTION

Press DIRECTION at any time to reverse the direction of play of the tape
in TAPE 1.

USING REVERSE MODE

Use REVERSE MODE to play both sides of the tape in TAPE 1 continuously, or
to have both sides of the tape play once and then stop.  Set the REVERSE
MODE switch to continuously play or one time play.

USING CONSECUTIVE PLAY

Follow these steps to pay a tape in TAPE 2 and then automatically play a
tape in TAPE 1.

1.  Load cassettes into both decks.

NOTE:  Load the cassette you want to hear first in TAPE 2.

2.  Set DOLBY NR OUT/IN to IN and select DOLBY NR B/C to B or C if the
    tapes were recorded with Dolby.  See "Dolby Noise Reduction."

3.  Press PLAY for TAPE 2.  The cassette in TAPE 2 plays.

4.  Adjust the volume, tone, and balance controls on your receiver/
    amplifier for the desired sound.

5.  Press PAUSE on TAPE 1.

6.  Press PLAY on TAPE 2.

When the cassette in TAPE 2 ends, TAPE 2 automatically stops and the tape
in TAPE 1 plays.  When the tape in TAPE 1 ends, TAPE 1 automatically
stops.  To temporarily stop the tape, press PAUSE.  Press PAUSE again to
continue play.

USING THE TAPE COUNTER

As you play or record a cassette tape in TAPE 2, the TAPE 2 COUNTER
advances.  Reset the counter to 000 by pressing the button to the right of
the TAPE 2 COUNTER.  You can then use the tape counter to quickly locate a
specific section of the tape.

USING AN OPTIMUS STA-5500/7500 REMOTE CONTROL

If you connect an Optimus STA-5500/7500 receiver to the cassette deck's
DECK PAUSE jack, you can use the receiver's remote control to pause TAPE
2.  The REMOTE PAUSE indicator || on the cassette deck lights when you
press PAUSE on the receiver's remote control.

DOLBY NOISE REDUCTION

This cassette deck uses the Dolby NR B/C noise reduction system to lower
the level of background noise or tape hiss.  As the deck records, the
Dolby NR B/C circuit "listens" to the program to find places where you
might later be able to hear the tape noise.  The Dolby NR B/C system
increases the music's volume so these sections are recorded at a higher
level.  When you play the tape, the circuit cuts the volume of these
sections, while at the same time reducing the level of tape hiss to one-
third the original level on Dolby B and one-eigth on Dolby C.

Before listening to a recording, set the DOLBY NR switch to the setting 
used for the original recording.

    Most commercially available recorded tapes with the Dolby mark are
    recorded with DOLBY NR, and should be played back with DOLBY B NR
    selector set to B type.

    To play back tapes recorded with the DOLBY C NR that have the Dolby
    mark, set DOLBY B/C to C.

    Tapes recorded with DOLBY NR should be played back with DOLBY NR
    IN/OUT set to OUT.

    Be sure to indicate the Dolby setting used on tapes you record.

DOLBY HX-PRO

Since the Dolby HX-Pro system is only used during recording, tapes
recorded using the system sound better than conventional recordings, even
on playback equipment without Dolby HX-Pro.  The Dolby HX-Pro effect is
independent of Dolby NR system settings (B, C or OFF).

To guarantee optimum recording results, this unit's HX-Pro system is
automatically activated whenever you record.
