PRO-508 (200-0408) Operation Faxback Doc. # 6984 SETTING THE VOLUME AND SQUELCH 1. Turn VOLUME counterclockwise to MIN. 2. Turn SQUELCH clockwise to MAX. 3. Set POWER ON/OFF to ON to turn on the scanner. The display turns on and SCAN, a channel number, and a frequency appear on the display. Note: When you turn on the scanner, the channel and frequency displays might come on already scanning. 4. Press MANUAL. The display stops scanning and a channel and frequency appear on the display. 5. Turn VOLUME clockwise 1/5 turn. Note: If you hear a transmission, wait until it stops before you continue. 6. Slowly turn SQUELCH counterclockwise until you hear a hissing sound. 7. As soon as you hear the hissing sound, turn SQUELCH clockwise until the hissing sound stops. Note: If the scanner picks up unwanted, partial, or very weak transmissions, rotate SQUELCH clockwise to decrease the scanner's sensitivity to these signals. PERMANENTLY STORING FREQUENCIES Follow these steps to store frequencies into the 20 permanent channel memories. Note: Good references for active frequencies are Radio Shack's "Police Call Guide Including Fire and Emergency Services," "Official Aeronautical Frequency Directory," and "Maritime Frequency Directory." We update these directories every year so be sure to get a current copy. 1. Press MANUAL. 2. Enter the channel number you want to store a frequency into. The current channel appears on the left and the entered channel appears on the right of the display. 3. Press PGM. PROGRAM appears on the display to indicate that the scanner is in the programming mode. 4. Enter the Frequency you want to store. 5. Press ENTER/L-OUT to store the frequency. Notes: If you make a mistake in Step 4, Error appears on the display. Press clear and repeat Step 4. If you want the scanner to pause 2 seconds after each transmission before scanning the next channel, press ./DELAY until DELAY appears in the display. 6. Repeat Steps 2-5 to program channels not in sequence. Repeat Steps 3-5 to program the next channel in sequence. SEARCHING FOR AND TEMPORARILY STORING ACTIVE FREQUENCIES If you do not have a reference to frequencies in your area, follow these stops to search for a transmission. 1. Press MANUAL or PGM. 2. To start your search from a desired frequency, enter the frequency number using the number keys. To start your search from a frequency stored in a channel, press MANUAL, a channel number, and MANUAL or PGM. 3. To search up from the frequency, press UP ARROW. To search down from the frequency, press DOWN ARROW. When the scanner finds an active frequency, it stops searching and you hear the transmission. The scanner stays on that frequency as long as it is active. The scanner automatically resumes searching immediately after the frequency becomes inactive. Note: Press ./DELAY to make the scanner pause for 2 seconds before continuing the search after the frequency becomes inactive. 4. To continue the search while the frequency is active, press UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW. To temporarily store the frequency into the monitor memory, press 0/MON. LISTENING TO THE MONITOR MEMORY You can listen to the monitor memory by pressing MANUAL or PGM, then 0/MON. MOVING A FREQUENCY FROM THE MONITOR MEMORY TO A CHANNEL 1. Press PGM. 2. Enter the channel number where you want to store the frequency that is in the monitor memory. 3. Press PGM, then 0/MON. The entered channel number flashes and the frequency that is in the monitor memory appears on the display. 4. Press ENTER/L-OUT. The scanner stores the displayed frequency in the channel. SCANNING THE CHANNELS To begin scanning, press SCAN. The scanner quickly scans through all the non-locked channels. When the scanner finds an active channel, it stops scanning and you hear the transmission. The scanner stays on that channel as long as it is active. The scanner automatically continues scanning immediately after the channel becomes inactive. Notes: Press ./DELAY to make the scanner pause for 2 seconds before continuing the scan after the channel becomes inactive. Set SQUELCH so you do not hear the hissing sound between transmissions or the scanner will not scan. LOCKING OUT A CHANNEL You can increase the effective scanning speed by locking out specific channels you do not want to monitor, such as a continuously active weather channel. 1. Press MANUAL. MANUAL appears on the display. 2. Enter the desired channel number, then press MANUAL again. 3. Press ENTER/L-OUT. L/O appears on the display. The scanner skips the locked-out channel when it scans. You can still manually select locked-out channels. To unlock a channel, manually select the channel and press ENTER/L-OUT so L/O disappears from the display. Note: There must be at least one active channel. You cannot lock out all channels. CLEARING A CHANNEL Follow these steps if you want to clear a channel. 1. Press PGM. 2. Enter the channel number you want to clear, then press PGM. 3. While you press and hold down CLEAR, press ENTER/L-OUT. MANUALLY SELECTING A CHANNEL You can continuously monitor a specific channel without scanning. This is useful if you hear an emergency broadcast on a channel and do not want to miss any details (even though there might be periods of silence) or if you want to monitor only a locked-out channel. 1. Press MANUAL. 2. Enter the channel number, then press MANUAL again. Notes: If the scanner is scanning and stops at the desired channel, just press MANUAL one time. If you repeatedly press MANUAL, the scanner steps through the channels. USING DELAY Many agencies use a two-way radio system that might have a pause between a query and a reply. To help avoid missing a reply, you can program a 2- second delay into an active channel. To program a delay into a specific channel. Simply manually select the desired channel and press ./DELAY. DELAY appears on the display. To program a delay when the scanner stops on an active channel during channel scanning or frequency search, quickly press ./DELAY while the channel is still active. DELAY appears on the display. When your scanner stops on an active channel with a programmed delay, it continues to monitor the channel for two seconds after it becomes inactive before it resumes scanning or searching. To turn off the programmed delay on any active channel, press ./DELAY while the channel is still active. DELAY disappears from the display. (SMM/smc-05/06/94)
