IR Photorelay Alarm (490-0310) Installation Faxback Doc. # 6764 CHOOSING A LOCATION For most applications, you mount the alarm and reflector on parallel walls so that the beam crosses a doorway or other opening. But the mounting brackets also let you mount the alarm on horizontal surfaces as a desk or counter top. Be sure there is an AC outlet close to the alarm's mounting location. The AC outlet should always be on (not controlled by a wall switch) so that you cannot accidentally turn off the alarm. You should mount the alarm and reflector low enough to prevent someone from crawling under the beam but high enough to prevent false tripping by pets or small children. You must aim the alarm beam directly at the reflector. Avoid locations that expose either unit to direct sunlight. This cause false alarms or damage. MOUNTING THE ALARM After you select a suitable location, mount the alarm as described below. Do not fully tighten the adjustment screws until you do "Beam Alignment." 1. Using the bracket as a template, mark the position for the two screw holes. 2. Mount the bracket using the two supplied screws. The slot in the bracket lets you slightly adjust the bracket (+/-5 degrees) after you insert the screws. 3. Using the four supplied thumb screws, attach the alarm to the bracket. You can adjust the alarm's angle (+/-22.5 degrees) before you tighten the thumb screws. MOUNTING THE REFLECTOR Be sure to mount the reflector at the same height as the alarm on a surface that is parallel to the alarm's mounting surface. 1. Using one half of the bracket as a template, mark the position for the two wood screws holes. 2. Mount the bracket using the two supplied wood screws. 3. Remove the protective paper from the adhesive strips on the back of the reflector and attach the reflector to the other half of the bracket. 4. Use two of the supplied machine screws to attach the reflector half of the bracket to the part of the bracket mounted on the wall (Step 2). ALIGNING THE BEAM 1. Before you plug in the alarm, set the mode switch to INSTANT and the POWER switch to OFF. 2. Turn the SENSITIVITY control fully clockwise to MAX. 3. Plug the power cord into a constant (not switched) source of AC power. 4. Set the POWER switch to ON. If alignment is incorrect, the alarm sounds and the ALIGNMENT INDICATOR is off. 5. Adjust the alarm or reflector angle until the sound stops and the ALIGNMENT INDICATOR lights. Firmly tighten the adjustment screws on both mounting brackets. ADJUSTING THE SENSITIVITY CONTROL For reliable operation, it is important that you properly adjust the SENSITIVITY control. 1. Set the mode switch to INSTANT and the POWER switch to ON. 2. Turn the SENSITIVITY control fully counterclockwise (MIN): the ALIGNMENT INDICATOR goes off. 3. Turn the SENSITIVITY control clockwise until the ALIGNMENT INDICATOR comes on. Then, turn it a little further in the same direction. 4. With the mode switch still set to INSTANT, block the beam by walking between the alarm and reflector; the alarm should sound. Note: If you set the SENSITIVITY control to MAX, it is possible that your alarm will not sound if a person in highly reflective clothing walks through the beam. CONNECTING EXTERNAL DEVICES The alarm functions properly as installed but adding one or more of these optional, external devices can increase the level of protection it provides. Back-Up Battery If it is important that a power failure does not interrupt your alarm's operation, you should connect a 12-volt battery (Cat. No. 23- 007) to the STANDBY BATT terminals on the alarm. Be sure to observe the correct polarity (+ and -). With the back-up battery installed, the alarm automatically switches to battery power during an AC power failure. The battery should last about 2 years if there are no AC power failures. The battery should power the alarm for about 10 hours during a power failure if there is no alarm sounding. If the alarm sounds during a power failure, the battery lasts about two full 5- minute alarm cycles. Test the battery regularly by unplugging the AC power cord and breaking the beam. To save battery power, set the mode switch to INSTANT. Plug in the AC cord after the test. External Sounder or Counter If you want the alarm to sound a tone at a location other than the place it is installed, you can connect an external sounder to the EXT SOUNDER terminals. The sounding device must be rated at 12-volt DC, 1 amp or less. You can connect a 12-volt counter to EXT SOUNDER terminals. Specific connections depend on the counter you use. Be sure to observe correct polarity. Note: If you do not want the alarm to sound when something blocks the beam (when using the alarm as a counter, for example), remove the INTERNAL SOUNDER jumper. Other External Device If you connect this alarm to a device that has normally open (N.O.) activation terminals (such as a perimeter alarm, motion detector, security dialer), connect the device's terminals to the alarm's N. O. RELAY CONTACT SWITCHING terminals. Warning: You must not program a security dialer to call a police station unless there is a number expressly for this purpose. Contact your local police for specific regulations. If the device does not have activation terminals, use the N.O. RELAY CONTACT SWITCHING terminals on the alarm as a switch to connect an external power source to the external device. The rating of the external device must not exceed 24V DC, 1 amp. Note: Any time something blocks the beam, the N.O. RELAY CONTACT SWITCHING terminals activate. It is likely that an N.O. device continues to operate even after the alarm stops sounding. Device using the N.O.terminals as a power switch turn off when the alarm stops sounding. If you use a chime (such as Cat. No. 273-071), remove the jumper from the INTERNAL SOUNDER terminals. Then, connect the chime to the alarm. To connect the chime to the alarm, connect the chime's red lead to the alarm's UNSWITCHED POWER FOR ACCESSORY terminal, the black lead to the (ground symbol) EXT SOUNDER terminal, and white lead to the "+" EXT SOUNDER terminal. Note: The alarm always supplies power to the chime through the UNSWITCHED POWER FOR ACCESSORY terminal regardless of the setting of the POWER switch (ON or OFF). So, be careful not to short-circuit this terminal with other terminals. (Never let the chime's red lead contact other terminals.) The rating of the UNSWITCHED POWER FOR ACCESSORY terminal is 12V DC, 0.2amp or less. Quad (4) Outlet Box (Used in basements, garages, or workshops in the home) 1. Turn off power to the outlet at the fuse box or breaker panel. 2. Plug the power cord into the outlet. 3. Remove the screw securing the corner of the outlet cover closest to the power plug. Caution: Do not remove any screws between outlets. Otherwise the outlet might be detached from the outlet cover. 4. Slip the clamp over the power cord near the plug. 5. Secure the power cord to the plastic clamp, and secure the outlet cover to the outlet by reinstalling the screw, as shown. 6. Restore power at the fuse box or breaker panel and test the alarm.
