CHOOSING A LOCATION

Choose a location for the TAD that is:

  Not in the way of normal activities

  Near a telephone jack

  Near an AC outlet

CONNECTING TO THE TELEPHONE LINE

The TAD comes with a modular plug installed on the end of the phone
cable.  Connect the TAD directly to the phone line by plugging it into a
standard modular phone jack.

Note:  If you want to connect both the TAD and a phone to the same jack,
       you will need a duplex jack, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 279-357.

If you do not have telephone jacks, you can:

Update the wiring yourself.  Radio Shack stores sell jacks and adapters
necessary to convert from older wiring methods to modular wiring.

Have the telephone company update the telephone wiring for you.

Note:  The telephone company will charge you for the jack installation.
       They also will ask for the USOC number of the jack to be
       installed.  This number is RJ-11C.

CONNECTING THE AC ADAPTER

Follow these steps to connect the supplied AC adapter to the TAD.

Caution:  Use only the supplied adapter with the TAD.  Using another type
          of adapter might damage the TAD.

1.  Plug the small end of the supplied Class 11 9-volt, 400 mA AC adapter
    into the DC 9V jack on the back of the TAD.

2.  Plug the other end of the AC adapter into a standard AC outlet.  The
    red POWER indicator lights.

3.  Run the AC adapter cord through the strain-relief slot on the back of
    the TAD.  This prevents the cord from being accidentally unplugged.

LOADING CASSETTES

Your TAD comes with two cassette tapes: the SFC-1 (for the outgoing
announcement with 30 seconds recording per side), and the SFC-60 (for
incoming messages with 30 minutes recording per side).  Your local Radio
Shack store has varying lengths of replacement tapes.

Follow these steps to load both cassettes.

1.  Take up any tape slack by turning the cassette hub with a pencil.

Note:  If there are STOPPER brackets on the cassettes, remove them
       before you take up the tape slack.

2.  Lift open the cassette compartment door and remove the plastic tab.
    Then load the cassettes with their full reels to the left and their
    open edges toward the front of the TAD.

Load the SFC-1 cassette in the OUTGOING compartment.  Load the SFC-60
cassette in the INCOMING compartment.

Notes:

If you want to set the TAD to play the outgoing announcement without
recording incoming messages, load only the outgoing announcement
cassette (SFC-1).

To set the TAD to answer and record calls, you must load both cassettes.

Replace both cassettes at least once a year, or more often if used
heavily.

Do not use the SCF-1 cassette in the INCOMING cassette compartment.  The
SFC-1 cassette is not long enough for more than one message.

The window on the cassette compartment door lets you see if the incoming
message cassette is installed and if the tape is full.  (When it is, the
full reel is on the right).
