Fax Modem (250-3581) Print and Video Capture Faxback Doc. # 5898 Print Capture allows you to capture printer output from popular applications, such as Microsoft Works and Harvard Graphics, into a file that BitFax can send as a fax. The main advantage of Print Capture is that it captures most of a document's formatting, such as underlined and bold text, graphics, charts, etc. With applications that can combine text and graphics, this utility is especially useful. For example, when BitFax sends a WordPerfect document, it first converts into a ASCII file, stripping the document of any graphics and formatting. If, however, you use Print Capture, BitFax will retain the documents formatting and include any imported graphics. NOTE: Print Capture and Video Capture do not work with Windows 3.0 or later. (In the Windows environment, use BitFax for Windows). TO USE PRINT CAPTURE: 1. Load Print Capture. You can load Print Capture from the communication Functions Menu by selecting the Print Capture option, or you can type the following command on the DOS prompt: PRINTCAP The Print Capture dialog box will appear, showing Print Capture's default "hot keys". These hot keys let you start, end or remove Print Capture, If you like, you can change the last letter of a hot-key combination. To change a combination, press [ENTER] to move the new hot key field you want to change and enter the new key combination. For example, to change the hot-key combination to remove Print Capture from [Lshift-Alt-R] to [Lshift-Alt-X], you would hold down the [Left Shift] and [Alt] keys and press [X]. 2. In the application, select the Epson FX-80 or IBM Graphic Printer as your printer. You do not actually need to have one of these printers connected to your computer. Print Capture will act as your printer. For example, if you are using WordPerfect, you would choose the Printer Setup command from the File menu and then select either the Epson FX-80 or IBM Graphic Printer. NOTE: You do not need to choose one of the above printers in BitFax. 5. Open the document you want to capture. 6. Hold down [Left Shift] and [Alt] the keys and press [P]. You will hear a beep indicating that you have invoked Print Capture. 7. Use the applications Print command. For example, in WordPerfect, you would press [Shift F7]. As your application begins printing, Print Capture will "pop up" and act as your printer, intercepting and converting the printer data into a file. The file's name indicates the time and date it was captured. For example, if you captured a document at 1:30 p.m. October 26, it's file name will be OT261330.PRN. The first two characters indicate the month; the second pair indicates the day; and the last four indicate the time in the 24-hour format. 8. Exit the application or repeat steps five through seven to Capture more documents. If you are finished using Print Capture, press [Lshift-Alt-R] to remove it from your computer's memory. 9. Start BitFax. To start BitFax from the DOS prompt, type BITFAX. From the Communication Functions Menu, choose option one, Send Fax Message. When you start BitFax, a dialog box will appear showing you that the previously captured documents are being converted. After BitFax has finished converting the files, press any key to return to the Main Menu. Notice that the captured file(s) is selected in the File Name field. You can now fax the captured document. NOTE: Print Capture is set to "timeout" after 45 seconds if it does not receive any printer output. Thus if you are printing a document that takes longer than 45 seconds to print, Print Capture will turn off before capturing the document. To run Print Capture without this timer, add the argument /DISABLE to the Print Capture command. For example: PRINTCAP /DISABLE You must capitalize the DISABLE argument. VIDEO CAPTURE Video Capture takes a snapshot of your screen and saves the image to a file. You can then send that file as a fax. This provides a quick way of faxing data from virtually any DOS application. Like Print Capture Video Capture is a memory-resident program. Once it is loaded, you can use other applications. Then when you want to capture a screen, just press a "hot key" and Video Capture will capture what is on your screen. NOTE: At the time this manual was written, Screen Capture could not capture graphics on VGA monitors, It can, however, capture screens in the text mode. Check your README.DOC file for an update. (If you hear four beeps, there was not enough disk space to save the image). If you captured a screen from a graphic application, such as PC Paintbrush, BitFax will create a PCX graphic file. If you captured the screen of a non-graphics application, such as a word processor, Video Capture will create a text file. Video Capture names the files VIDEO_??.PCX or VIDEO_??.TXT. The extension indicates if the files is a PCX or a text file. The question marks stand for consecutive numbers, for example, VIDEO_00.TXT, VIDEO_01.TXT, and VIDEO_00.PCX. After you have captured a screen, you can then fax the file. (SMC/all-07/05/94)
