360K Floppy Drive (250-1063A) Installation Faxback Doc. #5153 Adding an additional disk drive to your computer can greatly simplify disk related operations such as COPY and DISKCOPY. In addition, the increase in capacity improves interaction with your computer by increasing the number of files that can be made available to the system. Some application programs are greatly enhanced by the additional storage afforded by a second disk drive. One drive can be dedicated to a system (or DOS) diskette, while the other can be dedicated to an application program. Or, use one drive for the application and the second for data only. CONTENTS: Diskette drive Small screws INSTALLATION If you want to install this kit yourself, read this carefully before you begin the installation. If you feel uncomfortable doing this kind of work, your nearest Radio Shack Service Center can do the installation for you and guarantee the work. NOTE: If your computer has a hard drive, always park the hard drive's heads before you move your computer. See your computer owner's manual for details. As you install the disk drive, you will find it helpful to refer to the owner's manual that came with your computer. Because static electricity can destroy integrated circuits, be sure to discharge any accumulated electricity by touching a grounded metal object before you touch the drive or any of the computer's PC boards. Be sure that the computer's power and power to all the computer's peripheral devices (monitor, printer, modem, and so on) are off. 1. Unplug the computer's power cord from the wall. 2. Disconnect the computer's peripheral devices. 3. Remove the computer's cover. (Refer to your computer owner's manual for additional information.) 4. Locate the screws that hold the primary drive in place. It might be helpful to loosen these screws (without removing them) so that you can use the main unit as a reference for securing the new disk drive. 5. Slide your new disk drive into the empty drive mount. 6. Attach the disk drive to the drive mount bracket using the screws provided. (Refer to your computer owner's manual for additional information.) NOTE: You might have to lift the drive slightly to align the holes. 7. Look at the backs of the drives and locate the 34-pin ribbon cable that is attached to the primary drive. Connect the other end of the cable to the card edge connector on the new disk drive. Be sure to properly insert the connectors. Depending on the computer, you might need to twist the cable once so that the connector is turned 180 degrees. 8. Locate the computer's four-pin power connector and connect it to the four-pin connector on the new disk drive. You can connect this connector in only one way. Do not force it. NOTE: If you have installed the drive into a Tandy 1000 SX, be sure to remove the metal push washers before you remove the plastic panel. Place your thumbs on either side of the panel and push in evenly. The panel should pop out. NOTE: If you have installed the disk drive into a Tandy 1000 TL with two 3 1/2" drives, the switch setting for those 3 1/2" drives must be at Position 2 so that the 5 1/4" drive does not interfere. The jumper setting for the 5 1/4" drive must be DS1. (Refer to your computer owner's manual for additional information.) 10. Before replacing the computer's cover, tighten all the screws and check all the connections. 11. Replace the computer's cover and screws. 12. Carefully remove the shipping card from the drive slot. NOTE: If you have installed your new disk drive into a Tandy 1000 SL or TL, you must run SETUP to tell the system about the new drive. (Refer to your computer owner's manual for additional information.) You can now use your new disk drive on your computer. NOTE: The small screws that came with this kit may have metric threads. If you lose one, your Radio Shack store can order a replacement. (abo-08/03/93)
