Your computer's drive tray can hold three drives.  Depending on your
computer model, one or more of the bays may contain factory-installed
drives.  The 3 1/2 - inch bay accommodates a hard drive that is less than
1 inch (25mm) high.

Discharge any accumulated static electricity from your body by touching a
grounded metal object before touching drives, adapters, and any internal
computer components.  Refer to your drive documentation for information on
the setting any jumpers on the drive.

Installing a Hard Drive in the 3 1/2-Inch Bay

Your computer may have a factory-installed drive in the 3 1/2-inch bay.
Refer to these instructions if you need to remove and reinstall the hard
drive.  To install a 3 1/2-inch drive:

1.  Open the computer.  Refer to "Opening the Computer."

2.  Carefully turn the drive tray upside down to access the 3 1/2-inch
    drive bay.

3.  Refer to the drive documentation to locate the mounting holes on the
    drive.

4.  Slide the drive between the two brackets:

5.  Align the mounting holes on the drive with the mounting holes on the
    brackets.

6.  Install four screws to secure the drive in the bay.

7.  Refer to the drive documentation for information on aligning the
    cable connector with the connector with the connector on the drive.
    Connect one end of the cable to the drive's connector.

8.  Connect the other end if the drive data cable to the appropriate
    connector:

    For an IDE hard drive, connect to the IDE Hard Drive connector on the
    main logic board.  Refer to "Main Logic Board Layout."

    For any other type of hard drive, connect to the interface adapter for
    the drive.  Refer to the drive documentation and "installing a Non-IDE
    Hard Drive" for more information.

9.  Select a cable from the power supply, and connect it to the power
    connector on the back of the drive.

Caution:  The power cables are keyed to fit only one way.  Do not force
          the connections.

10. Run the setup utility to configure the drive.  Refer to the
    "Utilities" section.

Installing a Non-IDE Hard Drive

To install a non-IDE hard drive, install the appropriate interface adapter
in an expansion slot and connect the drive cable to the drive and to the
interface adapter.  Refer to the drive documentation for detailed
instructions.  Do not connect non-IDE drives to the IDE connector on the
main logic board.

ST-506 and ESDI hard drives cannot coexist with IDE drives.  If you
install an ST-506 or an ESDI drive, you will need to remove any previously
installed IDE drives.

A SCSI drive can coexist with an IDE drive, but you must use the IDE drive
as the primary drive.
