The size of the gap between the print head and the paper determines the 
printing pressure, which affects the darkness and quality of the type. The 
printhead gap also determines how smoothly the paper feeds. Be sure the 
print-head gap is correctly set for the type of paper you are using.

The following table gives recommend settings.

              PAPER TYPE              SETTING

              Standard, 20 lb.        3
              Most 3-part             5 or 6
              Thin                    Lower Settings
              Thick                   Higher Settings

When you begin using a different thickness of paper, run a self-test and
adjust the print-head gap until the print quality is good and the paper
feeds normally. See "Running a Self-Test."

NOTES:

* If the print smudges, the paper jams or feeds abnormally, or the ribbon
  loosens or comes off the print head during printing, select a higher 
  setting.

* If the print is too light or characters or parts of characters are
  missing, select a lower setting.

* If you do not correctly set the gap between the print head and the paper,
  you might damage the print head.

PRINT-HEAD PROTECTION

If the print head becomes too hot, printing automatically stops and the ON 
LINE indicator flashes.

When the print head cools, printing automatically resumes and the ON LINE 
indicator stops flashing.
