3200/Discovery CD-ROM Kits Sound Blaster 16 w/CDROM Faxback Doc. # 3140 250-1633/250-0200/01/02) The following are the factory default settings of the jumpers for the Sound Blaster 16 board, Catalog # 250-0201 or with the CD-ROM, Catalog # 250-0200: Interrupt - 5 8-bit DMA channel - 1 16-bit DMA channel - 5 Base I/O Address - 220H MIDI Port Base I/O Address - 330H Joystick Port - Enabled Audio Output Amplifier - Internal Amplifier A diagram of the jumper locations and names is located on page A-7 of the Sound Blaster 16 manual. PLEASE NOTE: You can change the interrupt and DMA channels without removing the card from your system by running SBCONFIG.EXE after installing the software. The rest of the settings listed above require jumper changes on the card if necessary. Procedure to install the software: (1) Insert the audio card diskette 1 of 3 in the disk drive. (2) Type: a: You will receive an a:\> prompt. (3) At the a:\> prompt type: install (4) Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation including changing the diskettes as needed through disk number 3. The installation program will create a directory on the harddrive called SB16. Your autoexec.bat file will have the following lines added: SET SOUND=C:\SB16 SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6 C:\SB16\SBCONFIG /s C:\SB16\SB16SET /M:220 /VOC:220 /CD:220 /MIDI:220 /TREBLE:0 You also have the option during installation to have the program add a command to the WIN.INI file in your Windows directory. If you select yes, the program will automatically set up the audio card's drivers and Windows applications for you when you run Windows the next time. I selected YES on this option. To test the sound card, I changed to the SB16 directory and typed: TESTSB16 The program immediately begins testing the Interrupt, DMA, and other hardware settings to make sure there are no conflicts. After this test is complete, you will be given the opportunity to run four separate tests such as 3-Voice, 4-Voice, 8-bit, and 16-bit sound. All four tests worked correctly for me. I obviously had speaker plugged into the Audio Out jack on the sound card located directly above the Joystick/MIDI connector. I also checked to make sure the volume control on the speakers was set to mid range. When entering Windows for the first time after installing the sound card drivers you will see a message that the Windows applications and drivers that came with the sound card software are being installed in Windows. You will notice that several icons are being built in a SB16 mixer group such as jukebox, SB16 mixer, etc. Select the SB16 mixer icon and make sure that the volume control option is mid range or higher. To make sure the sound is working correctly in Windows, select the Control Panel icon in the Main Group. From Control Panel, select the Sound icon. Select any of the sounds, ding, chime, etc. and select the test option. If you don't hear any sound, check Control Panel, and then Drivers, in order to make sure the following three Sound Blaster 16 drivers are listed: (1) Creative Sound Blaster 16 Auxilary Audio (2) Creative Sound Blaster 16 Wave and MIDI (3) Voyetra / Sound Blaster Super SAPI FM Driver If not, select the Add option and then the Unlisted, Updated option. You will be prompted to enter the path to the drivers. Type: C:\SB16\WINDRV\ This will bring up the list of the three drivers mentioned above. Select to add them to the list one at a time, until all three appear on the Drivers list. CD-ROM INSTALLATION In order to install the CD-ROM, Catalog number 250-0200, follow the instructions listed below: (1) Remove a drive bay plate from the front of the 3200 and insert the CD-ROM drive into the open bay. (2) Plug one end of the data cable included with the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM interface connector near the left edge of the Sound Blaster 16 card. There are no jumpers or switches to change on the card when adding the CD-ROM drive. Leave them at default. (3) Plug the other end of the cable into the data (4) Plug an available power connector from the power supply of the 3200 into the power connector next to the data cable on the back of the CD-ROM drive. PLEASE NOTE: It is very important that you make sure you are using the correct CD-ROM drivers disk. If you purchase the CD-ROM and interface card, Catalog # 250-0202, which does not include the Sound Blaster 16, there is a specific drivers diskette for this configuration. If you are using the CD-ROM connected to the Sound Blaster 16 configuration, Catalog #250-0200, you must use the CD-ROM drivers specifically for that catalog number or the drive will not work. (5) Place the CD-ROM setup diskette in your floppy drive A. Type: a: You will receive an A:\> prompt. (6) At the A:\> prompt, type: install (7) The CD-ROM driver installation screen appears. You are prompted for what I/O address your SB16 card is at. Press for the default setting. (8) The next question is the Interrupt your SB16 is at. Press for the default setting. (9) A pull-down menu appears. From it select Complete Installation and press . (10) Accept all defaults during installation by pressing . The program will automatically update your config.sys and autoexec.bat files with the lines necessary to load your CD-ROM drivers. Please Note: Be sure to edit the autoexec.bat file and move the CD-ROM driver statement, which is placed as the last line by the installation program, to the first line in the file. Also, don't forget to change the path in the driver line from C:\CDROM\MSCDEX to C:\DOS\MSCDEX as required by MS-DOS version 6 and greater. No other changes are necessary. The CD-ROM will be immediately recognized and usable on bootup of the 3200. (ABO-06/24/94)
