SENSATION! (250-1651) Troubleshooting Faxback Doc. # 2735 This section will help you correct problems you might encounter while setting up or using your computer. Refer to the "SVGA Video" section for video troubleshooting suggestions. F1 SETUP ERROR WHEN YOU START UP YOUR SYSTEM: The setup utility was not run correctly. Refer to the "Utilities" section. The CMOS RAM battery might need replacing. NO AUDIO Are all optional audio devices connected properly? Is the modem audio cable properly connected to the PC speaker connector on the audio adapter? Turn off the computer and all connected equipment. Remove the cords from the back panel and open the computer as described in "Opening and Closing the Computer." Check that the modem (installed in the bottom slot of the two-slot area) audio cable is connected to the PC speaker connector on the audio adapter with the key (cut out side) facing the outer edge of the adapter. NO RESPONSE TO KEYBOARD INPUT Is the keyboard cord plugged in correctly and securely? Is the computer turned on? SETUP PROBLEMS Are the system cords plugged in securely? Is the power outlet operating correctly? (Check by plugging another device into the outlet.) Are all expansion adapters firmly seated? Are all jumpers set correctly? Is the information entered with the setup utility correct? Select the correct settings in the setup utility. (If this does not work, turn off the computer and remove the battery; replace it after 30 seconds. Run the setup utility to reconfigure the system.) Is the battery properly installed? Is your hard drive properly configured? OPTIONS NOT WORKING Is the option expansion adapter firmly seated? Are all system cords plugged in securely? Are drives data and power cables connected correctly? Are all switches and jumpers set correctly? Was the setup utility run after installation? Is the information entered with the setup utility correct? MS-DOS APPLICATION PROBLEMS An error message indicates the SOUND and/or BLASTER environment strings were not found. Are the SOUND and BLASTER commands included in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file? The two environment strings specify the directory location, I/O address, Interrupt, and DMA channel settings of the audio adapter. If you make changes to the information affected by the strings, you must update the SET SOUND and SET BLASTER commands in the AUTOEXE.BAT file. The default commands added during adapter software installation are: SET SOUND=c:\sb 16 SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6 If you change the commands, restart the computer to activate the new settings. Software you installed reports detecting the I/O, interrupt, or DMA channel settings. Does the application support the BLASTER environment string? To compensate for applications that do not support the BLASTER string, you must reconfigure the SBFMDRV.COM, CT-VOICE.DRV and ORGAN.DRV to ensure that the hardcoded setting of the drivers correspond with the settings of the audio adapter. To reconfigure the SBFMDRV.COM driver, change to the \SB16 directory of the System Disc and type: instdrv [options] Where "options" are the appropriate adapter hardware settings. After typing all application options, press ENTER. To reconfigure the CT-VOICE.DRV and ORGAN.DRV I/O, interrupt and DMA channel settings, change to the \SB16 directory of the System DISC type: instdrv drv [options] Where options are the appropriate settings for the adapter's I/O, interrupt, and DMA channel. After typing all applicable options, press ENTER. There is no sound. Is all optional audio equipment connected properly? Is the volume properly adjusted? An error message indicates that the system environment space is used up. Is the following command included in the CONFIG.SYS file: "shell=c:\command.com/e:512/p" WINDOWS APPLICATION PROBLEMS No sound in Windows applications. Are all of the required sound drivers included in the drivers section of the SYSTEM.INI file? To check the SYSTEM.INI FILE, change to the Windows Program Manager. Select the File menu and choose the Run command. Type "sysedit" in the text box and click on OK. The following lines should be included in the SYSTEM.INI file: [drivers] timer=timer.drv midimapper=midimap.drv midi=sb16fm.drv aux=sb16aux.drv wave=sb16snd.drv wavel=vodafax.drv midil=sb16snd.drv [sndblst.drv] port=220 int=5 dma channel=1 hdma channel=5 midiport=330 If your system hangs when you exit Windows and Windows applications have no sound, the wave and wave1 drivers may be reversed. Be sure to include the wave commands as listed above. If one or more of the driver commands are missing, change to the Windows File Manager. Select the File menu and choose Run. In the text box, type "d: \sb16\winset up" and click on OK. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation. An error message indicates that the system cannot locate a device when MIDI, wave, or CD files play, or Windows fails to install a device driver. Are all of the required sound drivers included in the mci section of the SYSTEM.INI file? To check the SYSTEM.INI file, change to the Windows Program Manager, Select the File menu and choose the Run command. Type "sysedit" in the text box and click on OK. The following lines should be included in the SYSTEM.INI file: [mci] waveaudio=mciwave.drv sequencer=mciseq.drv cdaudio=mcicda.drv If one or more of the drivers are missing, refer to the Windows documentation for driver installation instruction. MIDI output is not audible. Is the MIDI mapper correctly mapped? Open the MIDI mapper in the Windows Control Panel. If you are using external MIDI equipment with the audio adapter, choose the MIDI port for mapping. Otherwise, leave the MIDI output mapped to the internal MIDI synthesizer. VIDEO TROUBLESHOOTING Following are some symptoms of video problems with possible solutions: NO DISPLAY -The video settings selected through the setup utility are not correct. Refer to the "Utilities" section. -Turn on the computer and monitor. -Readjust the brightness and/or contrast controls. -Plug system cords in securely. -Set related switches and jumpers correctly. DISPLAY ROLLS HORIZONTALLY OR VERTICALLY -Be sure to install the correct video drivers for your monitor. IMAGE IS OFFSET ON MONITOR -Adjust the monitor centering. Refer to your monitor documentation. DISTORTED IMAGES OR A BLANK SCREEN WHEN YOU RUN YOUR SOFTWARE -The software is not configured for the current video configuration. Reconfigure the software for VGA or EGA video. -The software is not compatible with the current video configuration. For an MS-DOS application, run the CLMODE utility to set the video to a video mode supported by the software. For a Windows application, run the SETRES utility to change the resolution. Refer to the "Utilities" section. INABILITY TO DISPLAY SUPER VGA GRAPHICS MODES -Run the CLMODE utility to set the appropriate frequency for using your monitor with these modes. Refer to your monitor documentation and the "Utilities" section. -Check that the maximum video resolution option of the setup utility supports the mode you want to use. -Run the setup utility to set the appropriate frequency and refresh rate for your monitor. Refer to your monitor documentation and the "Utilities" section for frequency information. (smc-12/06/93)
