TANDY 1000 RLX B (250-1452B) Installation Faxback Doc. # 1816 First we will discuss the correct procedure for installing MS-DOS 6.0 on a TANDY 1000 RLXB from scratch. (See Solution #1). Next, we will discuss the variables connected with MS-DOS 6.0 and a 1000 RLXB that failed the automated setup procedure. (See Discussion/Solution #2.) NOTE: DO NOT RUN THE MS-DOS 6.0 AUTOMATED SETUP PROCEDURE ON A 1000 RLXB. SOLUTION #1: Fix #1: (INSTALLING MS-DOS 6.0 ON A 1000 RLXB FROM SCRATCH). 1. Boot the 1000 RLXB with the MS-DOS 6.0 Disk #1.in floppy drive A:. 2. At the Setup Screen, push F3 twice. 3. At the A:\> prompt, type SYS C: and press After some time you will get a system transferred message and then an A:\> prompt. 4. At the A:\> prompt, type C: then press . 5. At the C:\> prompt, type A:SETUP /Q then press . NOTE: The /Q switch causes setup to uncompress and copy MS-DOS 6.0 files directly to your hard drive. 6. MS-DOS 6.0 will prompt you to insert diskettes as needed. Follow the instructions on the screen until all four diskettes have been copied to the hard drive. Setup will prompt you to press when the procedure is complete. Before you press take MS-DOS 6.0 diskette #4 out of the floppy drive, and put in MS-DOS 6.0 diskette #1. Then press . At the C:\> prompt, remove the MS-DOS 6.0 #1 floppy diskette from drive A: 7. At the C:\> prompt, press CTRL+ALT+DEL to boot MS-DOS 6.0. At this point you will be up and running MS-DOS 6.0. NOTE: When you SYS a hard drive with MS-DOS 6.0, the system files are no longer IBMBIO.COM AND IBMDOS.COM. They are IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS, and DBLSPACE.BIN. After you finish installing MS-DOS 6.0, use the ATTRIB command to unhide the IBMBIO.COM AND IBMDOS.COM files. Then delete them. The syntax is: At the C:\> prompt, type ATTRIB -A -R -S -H IBM*.COM then press . At the C:\> prompt, type DEL IBM*.COM then press . This will free up 70,904 bytes of hard drive space. DISCUSSION #2 If you installed MS-DOS 6.0 and got a hard drive write error, then pushed to continue, the 1000 RLXB will reboot. After you get the BIOS ROM message, you will get a message telling you to insert your uninstall diskette. If the uninstall diskette is corrupt or the automated Setup procedure has been run more than once, this message will never go away. The automated setup could not finish writing to the hard drive, so the boot track on the hard drive is corrupt. It appears to be trying to write to the ROM. Since You can not low level format IDE Hard Drives, we can do an FDISK and use the /MBR switch. The /MBR switch will reset the boot sector of the hard drive to its original condition. MBR is the acronym for Master Boot Record. Fix #2 (INSTALLING MS-DOS 6.0 WHEN THE UNINSTALL DISKETTE WON'T WORK). 1. Boot the 1000 RLXB with the MS-DOS 6.0 Disk #1.in floppy drive A:. 2. At the Setup Screen, push F3 twice. 3. At the A:\> prompt, type, FDISK /MBR then press . 4. At the A:\> prompt, type, SYS C: then press . After some time you will get a System Transferred message. After which you will get an A:\> prompt. 5. At the A:\> prompt, type C: then press . 6. At the C:\> prompt, type A:SETUP /Q then press . NOTE: The /Q switch causes setup to uncompress and copy MS-DOS 6.0 files directly to your hard drive. 7. At the C:\> prompt, remove the MS-DOS 6.0 #1 floppy diskette from drive A: 8. At the C:\> prompt, press CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot MS-DOS 6.0. At this point you will be up and running MS-DOS 6.0.
