Revised : 19/9/91@23:04EST 02X - Power supply failure. (I'm not sure this message is ever produced). [Editor's note: This error is generated when the power supply is outputting enough power to fire up the system, but for some reason the POWER GOOD signal is not being asserted. This is usually caused when people are either building a system from miscellaneous cards or have just replaced their mother- board. It occurs because some motherboards have on-board POWER GOOD signals, while others rely on a signal from the power supply. If your power supply provides POWER GOOD and your motherboard does too, your m'board should either be configured to accept the external one and ignore its own, or the PSU should be reconfigured to stop giving the signal. The safer of the two methods is to reconfigure the motherboard. Opening your PSU will certainly void your warranty, and possibly also your life.] 1XX - System board failure. 131 - Cassette interface failure. 2XX - Memory failure. 201 - Memory error detected during memory test. This message is preceded by a 4-digit hex number. The 1st 2 digits are the eight high-order bits of the 20 bit memory address in which the error was detected. The last 2 digits contain a 1 in each bit position where an error was found. This identifies the memory chip which failed. 3XX - Keyboard failure 301 - Key stuck. This message is preceded by a number giving the key code for a key which was read as being depressed during the power on test. This message will be generated if you accidentally hold down a key during the power on diagnostics. 4XX - Monochrome display failure. 5XX - Color Graphics adapter failure. 6XX - Diskette drive/adapter failure. 606 - Drive or adapter failed. 607 - Write protect detected. 608 - Read error accessing diagnostics diskette. 611 - Signal cable or drive adapter failure. 612 - Signal cable or drive adapter failure. 613 - " 621-626 - Drive failure. 901 - Parallel Printer Adapter failure. (NOTE: the manual says you must disconnect the cable before running this test. Possibly the message you got resulted from the cable being connected, if it was.) 110X- Asynchronous Communications Adapter failure. 130X- Game Control Adapter failed. 140X- IBM Printer failure. That's all I could find listed. However, the beep(s) produced during the power-on diagnostics are also meaningful, as follows: No Beep - Power supply failure. Continuous beep - Power supply. Repeating short beep - Power supply. 1 long and 1 short beep - Spurious interrupts, or ROM checksum error. 1 long and 2 short - Video RAM failure, or video sync pulses not detected on display adapter status register. 1 short beep but no display - the display's not working. 1 short beep and display - power-on diagnostics OK. You can find the latter in the ROM listings in the IBM Technical Reference; look for calls to ERR_BEEP. The DH register is loaded with the number of long beeps, and the DL with the number of short beeps, and then ERR_BEEP is called. Also -- message 1101 is generated with some kinds of internal modem (e.g., the Cactus Technology PC-COM-300) even though nothing is wrong.
